Steps on How to Clean and Maintain your Heat Pump

Cleaning and maintenance tips for your home system.

For a healthy, dry and comfortable home, a heat pump is a great option. But like anything to do with our home, they need to be maintained to stay in good shape.

Here we’ll take you through how to clean and maintain your heat pump, from practical cleaning steps to costs and tips.

Why do I need to clean my heat pump?

Your heat pump is in the heart of the home and gradually collects dirt, dust and debris. Overtime, this buildup can reduce efficiency and increase your power bills. You’ll start to find you are cranking up or down the temperature for little reward. Cleaning your heat pump regularly and booking in a service once a year will keep your heat pump working at maximum efficiency for a warm and cosy home, plus keep your heat pump working longer.

How to Clean Your Heat Pump

Step 1: Don’t forget, safety first.

Ensure your heat pump is turned off and don’t forget the safety goggles to avoid dust and debris in your eyes.

Step 2: Grab your tools.

For the indoor unit, you’ll need a vacuum or soft bristle brush. For the outdoor unit, you’ll need a hose and bristle brush.

Step 3: Outdoor Unit Cleaning

  • Sweep away any leaves and debris away from the unit.

  • Gently clean the fan blades and fins with the brush or vacuum.

  • Use the garden hose to spray the fins from the inside out, removing dirt and dust.

Step 4: Indoor Unit Maintenance

  • Make sure the indoor unit is turned off.

  • Remove the access panel to reach the filters.

  • Remove the filter panels from the main unit.

  • Gently clean the filters with a brush or vacuum until they are completely clear of dust.

  • Check the main system for any dust build up, and gently brush out any dust you find.

Step 5: Reassemble and Test

Put the heat pump back together and test it to ensure it runs smoothly.
